Chinese music

Today at naptime, same as every other day, The Dude got to choose two songs to sing after he was tucked in. Usually it’s Twinkle Twinkle or something from Sesame Street, but today he asked for Chinese Music.

We have a Kindermusik cd that has a chinese instrumental track on it, and every time it comes up, The Dude asks what it is and i say its Chinese music.

So today he asks me to sing it. There are several problems with this request. First of all, i don’t speak chinese, but really… the song is an instrumental. Even if i could speak the language, there were no words.

“Honey, i don’t know how to sing a chinese song”

“What’s a chinese song?”

“It’s something they sing in a country call China. That’s a place really far away, you’d have to take an airplane to get there”

“I will go far away and find Chiny and ask her how she sings her song. She will tell me it’s a tuba and we will play Chiny’s Music together.”

Oh my gosh… i’ve been saying Chinese Music and he’s been hearing Chiny’s Music!

I wonder how often this happens – that we’re having a conversation and don’t even realize that we’re talking about different things?
